The short answer
How much does a music licence cost in Australia?
There is no single fee for every business. OneMusic prices different uses by sector, music source and scale: audible area for shops and salons, seats for dining, devices for hospitality, members or annual class sessions for fitness, and FTE employees for workplaces.
A 100 m² shop using the Silver package pays A$297.46 including GST (A$270.42 ex GST) for the published 2026–27 background scope. A 30-seat café using Silver pays A$787.51 including GST (A$715.92 ex GST) when open at least 150 days. Retail agreement, p. 2 · Dining agreement, p. 2.
Shops, salons and clinics
Use only the area where music can be heard. Storage areas and car parks are not part of retail area; audible car parks have a separate component. A clinic using exercise-class music may need the Fitness scheme. Retail music in Australia.
Cafés and restaurants
Count indoor and outdoor seats where music is audible. Dining with six or fewer seats moves to Retail, priced by area. Fewer than 150 opening days may qualify for the published dining deduction. Café and restaurant music.
Gyms, hotels and offices
Classes are not passive gym background music. Hotels and pubs may combine devices, dining and other uses; offices use FTE, not retail area. Select the actual use in the calculator; events and unentered uses require individual assessment. Music for wellness businesses.
OneMusic, APRA AMCOS and PPCA: one scope, not three added bills
OneMusic combines applicable musical-work and recording rights for public performance. APRA AMCOS represents songwriters, composers and publishers; PPCA represents recording owners and artists. Do not add separate APRA AMCOS and PPCA fees on top of the same OneMusic cover. A streaming subscription is a different permission and cost. APRA AMCOS licensing · PPCA FAQs.

What this calculator counts — and what it does not
Exact tariff calculation: a published band or formula for the entered, supported scope. The gross total is the sum of components rounded to cents; ex-GST total = gross ÷ 1.10, rounded to cents. OneMusic may round an invoice differently by a cent.
Official example: only a scenario explicitly identified in an official source, such as the Tré Chic café example in the Dining guide. Our five table rows are worked tariff scenarios, not official examples.
Individual calculation: additional uses, unverified rights/minimum combinations, other sectors or incomplete details. No missing rate is treated as zero and no guessed total is shown.
Retail, Dining and Hospitality tables apply from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. Fitness and Workplace cards are July 2026 editions without a printed expiry date; no future CPI adjustment is invented. The live PDFs match the September audit byte-for-byte.
A$243 ex GST per year per Moodby zone.
Practical licensing questions
Music licensing in Australia: FAQs
Do I need a music licence for my business?
Playing copyright-protected music in a shop, café, gym, office or other business generally requires permission for the relevant works and recordings. OneMusic offers combined cover for its repertoire; directly licensed music must cover the actual rights and uses. Check the repertoire and permissions, not just whether a track is described as royalty-free. Source / details.
Are the figures in AUD and do they include GST?
Yes, all amounts are Australian dollars. Published OneMusic figures include 10% GST. The calculator shows both that gross fee and the ex-GST amount obtained by dividing by 1.10. Moodby is displayed on the same annual ex-GST basis. Source / details.
What details do I need to calculate OneMusic fees?
Choose the business type and rate period, then enter audible area, dining seats, devices, members or annual class sessions, or FTE employees as applicable. Open Parameters and conditions to declare opening days, additional uses, rights eligibility and music zones. One location is assessed at a time. Source / details.
Does a café with six or fewer seats use the Dining tariff?
No. The Dining guide directs a business with six or fewer dining seats to Retail & Service Providers, which uses audible area. The calculator asks for that area rather than pretending the dining fee is zero. Source / details.
Does a OneMusic licence allow commercial Spotify playback?
No. A public-performance licence does not override the terms of a personal digital music service. Commercial permission from the service provider is a separate matter; paying a OneMusic fee does not itself supply that permission. Source / details.
Do I pay APRA AMCOS and PPCA separately as well?
Not for the same public-performance rights already covered by the applicable OneMusic licence. OneMusic combines those rights. Other uses and direct licences need their own scope assessment; the calculator does not automatically stack overlapping licences. Source / details.
What is excluded from the displayed total?
The separate music supplier subscription and music uses not entered or supported by the selected scheme. Websites, on-hold, events, live performances, DJs, dancing, extra dining zones or different repertoire can require individual assessment. The result is for the declared scope, not every music activity in the business. Source / details.
Is this an official OneMusic quote?
No. This is an independent Moodby information tool reproducing published rates for supported scenarios. OneMusic decides the final classification, eligibility and invoice. Where the information is insufficient, request an individual assessment instead of relying on a guessed fee. Source / details.
