Frequently asked questions
Questions about OneMusic fees
How much does OneMusic cost in New Zealand?
It depends on your business type, size and how you use music. Enter your details above to get an estimate based on published rates and see potential savings with Moodby. OneMusic confirms your final licence fee.
What affects my OneMusic licence fees?
For bars and restaurants, floor area, your music source and the number of days with live music, DJs or karaoke can affect the fee. Other businesses may be charged by membership, class numbers or other measures. The calculator asks for the details that matter to your business.
How much is a music licence for a café, bar or shop?
Cafés and bars use OneMusic’s hospitality rates, while shops use retail rates. Choose your business type above for your own estimate, or see the worked examples for a 100 m² venue with one sound zone and digital background music.
Do the fees and savings include GST?
The main OneMusic rates shown include 15% GST. Savings compare that amount with Moodby’s annual price before any GST recovery. The current New Zealand Moodby checkout has not been independently verified, so confirm your final price and GST at checkout or on your invoice.
Do I need permission if I already pay for a streaming service?
Yes, if the music requires permission for business use. A personal streaming subscription alone does not provide it, and a OneMusic licence does not change the streaming service’s own terms. You need both the appropriate music rights and a service that allows business use. Read OneMusic’s guidance ↗.
Can I play royalty-free music without a OneMusic licence?
You may be able to, if the music is licensed directly for your business use in New Zealand. Check the provider’s terms and any legal exceptions — “royalty-free” is not permission to play any music. Radio, TV and music outside that catalogue may still need separate licences.
Can Moodby replace my OneMusic background-music fees?
You may be able to reduce those fees by switching to Moodby’s catalogue for background music in your paid sound zones. Moodby’s terms and any legal exceptions apply. Check any remaining rights and your OneMusic cancellation terms before switching. The savings shown are potential, not guaranteed. See Moodby’s licensing information ↗.
What if I also have live music, DJs, karaoke or events?
Add them to your calculation. The Moodby comparison is for background music only, not live performances, DJs, karaoke, classes or music on hold. Events may need separate APRA and Recorded Music NZ licences. If a fee needs confirmation, you’ll see a partial result or individual assessment, not a misleading total.
Is this an official OneMusic calculator or a licence quote?
No — it’s an independent calculator by Moodby, based on published rates. OneMusic NZ is a joint initiative of APRA AMCOS and Recorded Music NZ. This tool gives you an estimate, not a licence or a confirmed quote. Read the official OneMusic FAQs ↗.
